Learning and wellbeing

Wellbeing is more than just optimal physical health, it’s about feeling satisfied and happy as well as developing as a person, being fulfilled, and making a contribution to the community. Wellbeing consists of different elements or dimensions.

A person’s wellbeing is paramount to their ability to function and succeed, be resilient, manage their day-to-day responsibilities, and their feeling of happiness and fulfilment. Wellbeing is a core priority for the Bremer Alliance of State Schools, recognising that supporting wellbeing is multifaceted—meaning it needs to encompass not only students, but also the greater community of parents and staff.

The Bremer Alliance of State Schools supports and promotes wellbeing by building a positive learning culture, providing challenging, interactive and engaging learning experiences and by nurturing relationships with families and the wider community. Students support their own wellbeing by being actively involved in their school and community - research on resilience shows a sense of belonging is critical for young people.

The ‘Learning and Wellbeing Framework​’ for all Queensland state schools incorporates aspects of current practice and supports schools to:

  • acknowledge the importance of wellbeing to the learning process
  • develop a rich school culture and positive ethos that creates a sense of belonging through:
    • self-responsibility, leading to positive behaviour, improved student attendance
    • achievement
  • embed personal and social capabilities within the general curriculum
  • improve educational outcomes for all students.

Optimising wellbeing within the school context requires a whole-school approach that covers practices in a multitude of areas. Wellbeing is both central to learning and an outcome of learning. It is multidimensional and characterised by feeling well and functioning well for:

  • parents and carers
  • students
  • staff.
